Hoover Fire Department

Hoover Firefighters responded to the Clubhouse at The Abbey at Wisteria Crest early Friday morning. Upon arrival, crews found smoke pouring from the building and began their attack. The fire, which went to 2 alarms, was extinguished around 10:30AM.

The cause of the fire is thought to be suspicious and under investigation.

Great work was done by Hoover Firefighters to protect the nearby apartment building, which was only a few feet away from the involved structure!

Joint Training Exercise

Emergency responders from Hoover and the surrounding areas took to the streets near the Riverchase Galleria to make sure the area was prepared should a tornado strike.

"In reality, if this area was hit by a tornado, we've seen nationwide it could be a couple of hours before you could actually get vehicles in here because you've got to clean debris out of the way," Hoover Police Captain Jim Coker said.

Agencies tested all aspects of disaster response, including incident command, rescuing and treating victims, traffic control, and communications.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Rick Brasfield’s granddaughter has a rare bone disease that she has been fighting since 2007. Her family is about to incur some medical expenses that her insurance company does not cover. Please read the story of Olivia below and consider helping in any way you can.

Olivia Dearman is a beautiful 14 year old who was diagnosed in June, 2007 with an extremely rare bone tumor (Desmoplastic Fibroma). Since the discovery of the tumor Olivia has undergone four major surgeries in Birmingham and at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. The surgeries required the removal of a large portion of bone, including the jaw bone and teeth, on the left side of her face. Reconstructive surgery was conducted in November 2009 and she now faces yet another reconstructive surgery followed by implant surgery to replace her teeth.

The insurance company has covered all the surgeries but has denied coverage for the implant surgery. Olivia's parents are now facing surgical and hospital cost in excess of an estimated $60,000. A fund, "Olivia Smiles" has been established in order to assist in meeting these ever rising costs. If you would like to contribute please send your donations to:

Birmingham firefighters responded to a 2-Alarm fire on 10th Avenue South, across from Magnolia Park, on July 28. The 2-story wood frame structure sustained 100% fire damage, with exposures on both sides sustaining 50% fire damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wednesday, the Birmingham Firefighters Local 117 held the 10th Annual Billy Self Memorial Golf Tournament at the Woodward Golf & Country Club. The tournament was a huge success with over $10,000 raised for charity. There was so much interest in this year's event that teams were being turned away.

Saturday, Irondale Fire & Rescue responded to a cross-over MVA on I-20 westbound between Kilgore Memorial and Old Leeds Road. Upon arrival, crews found a tan car embedded in the grill of a tractor trailer truck. The driver of the passenger car was pronounced on the scene.

3rd Annual Heroes and Hooks Fishing Tournament

Eligibility: Police & Fire
Entry fee: $80 per boat (includes big fish)

Blast off will be from Covenant Cove

All boats must have all the safety equipment required and approved by the U.S.C.G.
Only largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass 15 inches or longer will be weighed in.
Five fish limit per boat.
2 Dead fish allowed with 8 oz. penalty each.
Any boat late for weigh-in will be penalized 1 lb for every minute late.

According to the number of boats entered, the top three places and big fish will be paid based on an 80% payback scale. Additional prizes will be given away by a drawing.

You must be a firefighter or police officer to compete.

A state fishing license will be required for each competitor.

Birmingham 2-Alarm Warehouse Fire - Part 5

Birmingham Fire & Rescue responded to a report of smoke near 1029 1st Avenue, North, Friday, March 5, at 2:30pm. Upon arrival, Engine 6 reported smoke coming from the building and requested a full response. That lead to a 2nd alarm. Crews fought the fire well into the night.

Truck 1 setup on 1st Avenue, North. The Interstate, which runs next to the building, was closed. Truck 2 setup on the Interstate and Engine 2 laid from 3rd Avenue and 11th Street all the way up the off ramp and down the Interstate to Truck 2's location.

While this fire was gong on, Birmingham had a 2-Alarm fire on the Southside, as well.

An awesome job was done by all the firefighters on the scene to bring the large fire under control.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue responded to a large fire at the Sunrise Pointe Apartments off Oporto Madrid. Upon arrival, heavy fire was reported and a 2nd and 3rd alarm were struck. Complicating matters was the fact there were unusually high winds and rain that night.

Great work by Birmingham Fire & Rescue prevented a larger catastrophe than there already was.

2-Alarm Hunter Ridge Apartment Fire

Irondale firefighters responded to an apartment fire at Hunter Ridge Apartments off Gadsden HWY Thursday afternoon. Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.

Upon arrival, Engine 3 reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the three story building.

Irondale made a quick jump on the fire and requested Birmingham respond to assist with firefighting efforts.

Firefighters on the scene put a good stop on the fire, which had already had a big start prior to their arrival.
