Firefighter Grant Program Applications

Shelby: Applications Now Available for Firefighter Grant Program

WASHINGTON, DC Wednesday, April 15, 2009 -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the application period for the fiscal year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program is now open.

“The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program provides critical funding to fire departments across Alabama,” said Shelby. “These grants help firefighters purchase equipment and vehicles that allow them to continue efforts to ensure the safety of our citizens and our communities. I strongly encourage fire departments that seek federal assistance to complete an application to the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program before the deadline of Wednesday, May 20, 2009.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) AFG program funds projects to purchase new equipment, improve firefighter health and safety programs, and improve the effectiveness of firefighting and emergency response operations. The AFG Program assists rural, urban, and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. Non fire-based Emergency Medical Service organizations may also apply for grants.

FEMA will accept applications through May 20, 2009 at 5:00 pm EDT. For more information or to obtain an application for the AFG Program visit www.firegrantsupport.com. Fire departments that have questions regarding the AFG Program should contact the DHS Help Desk at 1-866-274-0960 or send an email to firegrants@dhs.gov
