Thursday, September 11, Birmingham Fire & Rescue will join other departments around Alabama and the Nation in a memorial observance for those who lost their lives during the events of September 11, 2001.

Following is the series of events for the Birmingham Fire & Rescue ceremony for September 11, 2008:

At 0846, the time of the initial attack, Fire Alarm will sound a monotone and all feasible apparatus in Battalion 1 will be pulled out onto their ramps in preparation for Phase 1 of the 9/11 tribute; turn on their lights, but “no sirens”, and pause for a “moment of silence”. [Stations 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 24, 25]

At 0902, the time the second plane struck, Fire Alarm will sound a monotone and all feasible apparatus in Battalion 2 will be pulled out onto their ramps in preparation for Phase 2 of the 9/11 tribute; turn on their lights, but “no sirens”, and pause for a “moment of silence”. [Stations 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 21]

At 0937, the time the Pentagon was struck, Fire Alarm will sound a monotone and all feasible apparatus in Battalion 3 will be pulled out onto their ramps in preparation for Phase 3 of the 9/11 tribute; turn on their lights, but “no sirens”, and pause for a “moment of silence”. [Stations 3, 8, 10, 12, 19, 22, 23]

Between 0938 and 1003, a tribute ceremony will take place with the Fire Chief or his designee at Fire Station #1, 1808 7th Avenue North, Downtown Birmingham.

At 1003, the time that United Airlines flight crashed, Fire Alarm will sound a monotone and all feasible apparatus in Battalion 4 will be pulled out onto their ramps in preparation for Phase 4 of the 9/11 tribute; turn on their lights, but “no sirens”, and pause for a “moment of silence”. [Station 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32]

After the moment of silence, about 1006, Fire Alarm will acknowledge that this part of the observance is concluded.

At 1010, Fire Alarm will direct all stations to lower their flags to “half staff” for the duration of September 11th. The lowering of the flag would serve as a memorial to all Americans who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and honor and tribute to our service men and women currently serving in the armed forces.
