The Birmingham City Council has accepted a more than $2 million bid for construction of Birmingham Fire Station 22/10 in South Avondale.

Fire Chief Carl J. Harper said the station is expected to be built on a parking lot at 4439 Fifth Ave. South. It will serve the Forest Park-South Avondale and North Avondale areas.

"It's a pretty big project," Harper said.

He did not know when construction would begin but said it would probably take about a year to build the station.

Station 22/10 will replace both Fire Station 22 at 3114 Clairmont Ave. and Fire Station 10 at 4120 Second Ave. North. City officials decided to combine the stations based on a recommendation by Firescope Inc., a consulting firm that studied Birmingham fire stations in 2003.

Stations 22 and 10 are outdated, Harper said. "Some of the larger ladder trucks could not fit."

Station 22 was built in 1927 and Station 10 in 1926. Harper said the new station is expected to have five bays; the old stations had two each.

The new station will be handicap accessible and will cost less to operate, Harper said.

And yet another stupid move by Birmingham. This decision was made because a company from ANOTHER city was doing a "study" on Fire Stations and thought it would be a good idea. (If I'm not mistaken this was the same group that said we should combine 12 & 19 as well as 1 & 6. How stupid! Sorry Station 3, your call volume is about to go up even more once they move 22 on into Avondale..........

just think mayor kincaid dropped the ball as well as bfrs when wal-mart wanted to build a new 26 at the new shopping center, langford might have jumped all over that, free to the city for a new sta. and 26 is a well.. old hole..birmingham does need to modernize and build stations and accomidate with new times in the fire service, combining stations though is not a good idea in my opinion. some stations are so old and wore down and some have terrible bug and rat problems i have seen it myself..lol

Why not combine 12/19 and 1/6. They are running each others calls so why not give them a new station to run out of to improve moral since the call volume is sooo high.

Why not at least give station 3 a bottle of lube before they make the move, that would be the kind thing to do. What an intelligent group of people.
