BFRS Natural Gas Line Fire
Birmingham Fire & Rescue
Birmingham Firefighters responded to the old Birmingham News building, which was in the process of demolition, to a reported gas leak. Upon arrival, Engine 1 found construction workers trying to contain, but not extinguish, a large blaze from a 6" gas pipeline with a handline off a hydrant.
Engine 1 assessed the scene, laid a line and went to work while they waited for the gas company. Complicating matters, the gas line fire was blowing down on a pile of wood and construction debris that had been piled up in the corner of the basement.
While Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and, at the same time, prevent the pile from erupting into flames, the gas company dug up the street to get to the shut-off valve.
Quick work by Birmingham Firefighters helped to contain the blaze and prevent the pile from erupting. Great job!
A special thanks to Nozzleman Brasfield for wearing the DAVE911 Helmet Cam!

AWESOME!!! CANT WAIT FOR THE VIDEO!!!
Nice job Dave!
Wow! Either someone wasn't paying attention or that building wasn't going down without a fight. Either way, congratulations on your new helmet cam. I bet you were tickeled pink when you opened that box.
Come to think of it, I've walked that sidewalk many a time. Scary to think if it had a deep crack in it...
Am I hallucinating or can I very faintly hear the SCU tones from Emergency! in the background when Engine 1 is getting ready to roll in the video???
Jared - Yes, Engine 1 uses that tone as the alert tone for their CAD computer.
Hurray for the firefighters!!! Great job!! Couldn't imagine if it really explode.
AWESOME!! And just can't get it pass by. Just congratulating the firefighters who made it all possible.
