Really a shame that the Fire Dept. has a monoply on Ambulance Service in Birmingham....Very unfair to private enterprise...

Oh yes. I remember when free enterprise was alive and well in the B'ham EMS biz. I was initially making about $3.50/hr (EMT Intermediate)and only getting paid for 16 of the 24 hours I worked. the pay was lousy but at least I got to stay up all night!

Dear Anonymous,
You have NO freakin' idea what it WAS like. I do. I was there in '79 & '80. It stank! I'd give my lefy knut to have a transport system in the county I work in. You have to ask 2 questions...
1. Do you want the best for the patient?
2. Do you only want to make money?
If pt. care is your #1 goal, you will answer yes to #1 and no to #2.
The best system for that poor soul lying in the street is a municiple system. I was very glad B'ham had the nads to do what they did. At that time, private enterprise was NOT providing the best poss. pt. care.

Well I don't know where this came from but I have seen a hell of a lot of people die in both systems. Municipal and private. I was there in the 80's and 90's also. It hasn't anything to do with the system but the people who work in it.There are crappy medics in the municipal system just as well as the private system.

I agree with you Jim. We were there together in 90 and 91. It was the people. The reason B'ham went to operating ambulances is because they make money from it. It must be nice to get tax moneys AND bill your taxpayers. Anyway, at least some of us cared about our patients even when we had terrible or no equipment to work with. Oh yea I also forgot no sleep either. Jim send me and e-mail at kla222000@yahoo.com. Lets get caught up.
