2 Fairfield Officers Down

Fairfield Police Department

Two Fairfield Police Officers were shot while responding to a call in the 5400 block of Avenue H in Fairfield this morning. Both were transported to University Hospital.

Officer Mary Smith lost her life in the line of duty. Officer Smith had just retired from the Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct after a 21 year career. She had been with Fairfield Police Department for about 2 months. There has been nothing but praise for her life and career.

Officer Erick Burpo, also a Marine, had surgery for gunshot wounds he received to the leg. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Please remember Officer Erick Burpo in your prayers, as well as, Officer Smith's soul and both of the Officers' families and fellow Officers.

God rest her soul. She will be missed.

Funeral arrangements have been tentatively made for this Friday at 12 Noon.

LifeSaver was dispatched and was told to land at Miles College. They did make it to the scene and circled in the air but the Officers were transported by ground.

May the Angels of God wrap their mighty wings around Officer Smith. I did not know her personally but her loss is felt by all of us in the law enforcement family. Remember to keep Officer Smith's daughter in your prayers tonight. I thank God that at the end of my shift yesterday, my guys all went home safely. I will also remember the dispatchers who were on duty when this terrible tragedy occurred. They feel the terrible pain, too.

I did not know her but I was really touched by the whole thing and I think that he should get life in prison for the murder because one thing about it he can not run from GOD.

Oh and the black unknown police cruiser is a Fairfield unmarked- although it may have a simple city seal by the front door- I've seen a lot like that
